UI Sloan Center Mentoring Conference
Our plan is to build a national network of mentors – faculty at colleges and universities that serve a significant number of undergraduate and Master’s level minority students who are eager to see that those of their students who have the ability and the desire to earn a doctoral degree in STEM have every chance to do so. As a first step toward this plan, we have invited approximately 30 STEM faculty who have played leading roles in the effort to increase minority participation in STEM fields at the college and postgraduate levels to a meeting at the University of Iowa on August 1. The purpose of the meeting will be to introduce these national leaders to our UI Sloan Faculty and our facilities and to present, in detail, the goals and objectives for our UCEM. We will then ask each participant to assist us in identifying faculty with whom we may partner via our mentoring network. We will ask these mentors to identify minority students at their school who would be good candidates for our UI/Sloan doctoral programs and we will pair these students with one of our UI Sloan Faculty.
